The region of Karabakh is considered to be one of the most heavily mined regions of the former Soviet Union. Millions of landmines, Cluster Munition Remnants  (CMR) and UXO are scattered throughout Azerbaijan’s territory. More than  1,400 Azerbaijanis have been killed and almost 15,000 have been wounded by explosive ordnance accidents. Two-thirds have been civilians.

In November 2020, a ceasefire agreement was signed, granting Azerbaijan control of large parts of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories that had been occupied by Armenians since the first Karabakh war in the 1990s.

Intergroup Xtrace (IGX) has partnered with British SafeLane Global and Azerbaijani Qaia for much-needed survey and clearance of land in Karabakh. IGX supplies MDDs and staff for integration into the larger SafeLane/Qaia mine/UXO capacity.
